Clients And Special Projects
Mr. Lightning has worked on a number of specialty grounding, surge, and lightning protection projects. These projects often require the assistance of Mr. Lightning to obtain a design that meets NFPA Code 780, U.L. Master Label Code 96A, and LPI Code 175.
Denver International Airport Terminal and Parking Structure (DIA)
The Denver International Airport Terminal and Parking Structure (DIA) uses a tent-like structure above the main terminal which did not allow the lightning protection to be designed for a standard roof system. The original design did not meet Master U.L requirements; and, the engineers did not believe a system could be designed to meet code. Mr. Lightning created a design using the supporting steel cables for the "tent" which ultimately passed all inspections.
The Space Intelligence Building, Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado Springs, Colorado
The
Space Intelligence Building,
Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado
Springs, Colorado required
the protection of a Cray Computer
and other sensitive equipment. A
conventional lightning protection
system was installed, which included
a counterpoise around the building
and chemical grounds every 50 feet.
A low rating of two OHMS was achieved.
The Laser Radar Testing Facilities at White Sands and Kennedy Space Center
The Laser Radar Testing Facilities
at White Sands and Kennedy
Space Center both needed
to protect a trailer housing
over $ 1 million worth of highly
technical computerized equipment.
A conventional lightning protection
system was used on the trailer
along with a counterpoise
around the perimeter and tied the
system into the ground plane for
the laser radar system. An EFI service
entrance MXPB was installed
at the main disconnect, an MA5 SW
sine wave tracking was installed
on the two sub-panels, and
individual strips were installed
on the computers.
The Hazardous Waste Disposal Facility at Rocky Mountain Arsenal
The Hazardous Waste Disposal
Facility at Rocky Mountain
Arsenal required the redesign
and installation of a conventional
lightning protection system
which would meet national codes.
Careful treatment was necessary
since the buildings were metal
and housed sophisticated computer
equipment A Master Label was
obtained on all three buildings.
Lockheed Martin
Lockheed Martin has several structures that have been protected over the last few years including the Module E-Administration Building, Science Physics Lab, Antenna Test Facility, Design to Produce Facility, and Inventory Building. The Acoustics Vibrations Lab required drilling down to water level and installing 40 foot ground rods to get the required OHMS resistance. In each case, a conventional lightning protection system and counterpoise was installed, and the systems had to be redesigned to meet U.L. Master Label requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are lightning surge supressors and voltage spike protectors adequate protection?
Such devices are a very important part of a complete Lightning Protection System, but used alone will not protect a structure from lightning damage.
Will I be safe if my building is in a low lying area?
No! Lightning frequently strikes in low lying areas as well as in higher areas.
